The Discipleship Training School (DTS)
YWAM DTS seeks to bring you into a more intimate relationship with God. It also gives you an opportunity to discover your passions and your part in God’s purposes for the world. It is for those who long to follow Jesus in new ways with a different perspective. The DTS is a 5 months school. It has a 3 month lecture phase here in Heredia, Costa Rica and then we will go on outreach for around 8 weeks to Argentina.
During the lecture phase of the Arts DTS, students will have daily classes that will help them grow deeper in their relationship with God and His Word. You’ll learn not only from lectures but also from community living and practical training. We will also have Art workshops where students will be able to grow in their abilities and seek God as how to use them for His kingdom. We will also be working with youth in a slum community in Heredia once a week as part of the school ministry time. During the first week, students will experience an introduction to the three arts so they can choose which one they would like to focus during the DTS.
Throughout the Arts DTS, students will be encouraged to be creative and think outside the box. This vision will be put in practice during ministry time. Students will be motivated to create new and unique ministries so they can reach other people through arts and their passion.
Some of the lecture teachings of the DTS will include
- The character and nature of God
- Hearing the voice of God
- How to know and communicate God’s Word effectively
- Biblical world view
- Intercession and spiritual warfare
- Worship and prayer
- Restoration of the heart and mind
- Fellowship with the Holy Spirit
- The Power of the Holy Spirit
- Revival and reformation
- Missions and evangelism
The outreach phase of the Arts DTS focuses on applying what you learned in the classroom through an intense, cross-cultural experience. Outreach will be a time to be creative and seek God’s creative way to reach out to people and extend the Kingdom of God. Jesus was always breaking the mold. Our focus will be to reach the lost of the cities. Students will be motivated to pray and seek God for the outreach activities and will be supervised by staff. For outreach we will be going to the cities of Mendoza and Cordoba in Argentina. Although, keep in mind that God could lead us to go elsewhere or have a group go elsewhere. Part of the challenge for students it to use their creative artistic abilities for outreach, so we will do many new and different things in ministry.
God is the creator of everything and the biggest artist. He created us and called us to be co-creators with Him. Let your gifts, passions, and dreams meet Him and let’s transform the artistic world!
God has blessed us with great teachers for the workshops:

He and his wife Jan have been church planters and pastors in California for 20 years and Tom taught at Azusa Pacific University in the Department of Art and Design for 12 years. Now retired Tom has a passion for visual art and equipping young adults with the tools necessary to use the arts to reach the world for Christ. Tom says, “The dramatic, musical and visual Arts contain an international common language that is a bond that bridges our differences in culture. To use this common language for God’s glory is our high calling.”
